A Guide To Car Seats

A car seat in an important purchase and needs to be carefully thought about before a decision is made. This may well be the first purchase for your new baby and there are many manufactures available within the UK. And it is important to note that you will need a car seat before you allowed to leave hospital with your new baby.
At Baby & Co we only stock quality car seats from Britax, Mamas and Papas, Maxi Cosi, Recaro and Jane. Through are years of experience we are confident that manufactures like Britax thoroughly test each and everyone of their car seats and they all meet the highest British standards. In particular Britax are one of the few manufacturers who have their own crash test rigs to test car seat performance in specific cars. Their fit-finder service is a valuable tool for prospective customers.

A Good Fit
It is important to ensure your chosen car seat fits your car correctly. Britax recommend that you make sure the child seat fits firmly on to your vehicle's car seat. There should be no excessive forward or sideways movement and that the seat belt buckle should be straight when locked. It should not rest on the child car seat frame as it may snap open in an accident (buckle crunch).
It is also good practice to secure your child properly for every journey, no matter how short. Adjust the harness every time, so that one or two fingers only can be inserted between the child and the harness. Position the harness buckle low over the hips, not over the stomach. The diagonal seat belt should rest on the child's shoulder, not the neck.

Every car seat comes complete with a full set of instructions, which need to be carefully read. Its always good to get you car seat well before the birth of your baby to ensure you are completely confident with the instillation procedure.

Instillation
All car seats are rearward facing up to 13kg and above that weight you can choose a forward facing seat.
It is important to note that rearward facing car seats should not be used in the front seat of a car, which has an active airbag.
Most car seats are secured by the seat belt 3-point lap and diagonal seat belt. Most of the Britax range is fitted in this manner.
The Mamas and Papas Primo Viaggio Car Seat has the added benefit of the Surefix base. This ensures a correct fitting as the car seat simply clicks into position. A new innovation that is becoming more widely available on most modern cars is Isofix. The benefit of ISOFIX is that it will create a rigid link between the child seat and the car to provide extra solidity. The ultimate aim is that any ISOFIX child car seat you buy will fit your car simply by plugging it into the ISOFIX points. The Britax Cosy Tot ISOFIX has all the features of Britax Cosy Tot and installs in your car using the specially designed base and ISOFIX connectors

Travel System Compatible
Another consideration is if the car seat is compatible with your choice of pushchair or pram. In particular the Jane Rebel, Mamas and Papas Primo Viaggio, Maxi-Cosi Cabrio, Britax Cosi Tot Premium and Recaro Young Profi are all Travel Systems compliant and provide a simple solution to those difficult first 12 months.
