Handy Guide To Choosing A Cot

posted in Nursery Shopping Guides by Babyandco on March 14th 2018 9:37 AM

Choosing a cot will be one of the essentials when preparing for your new baby.

There are lots of different factors to consider when choosing a cot. Do you have space in your home for a separate nursery, or does the cot need to fit into your bedroom? Do you have difficulties bending or lifting? You will want a cot that fits into your home and your lifestyle, but that is also easily accessible for you as a parent.

You will also want to consider safety. Here at Baby & Co, the safety of your child is our top priority. We won’t stock something if we don’t believe that it is truly safe. Our cots and cot-beds will always comply to safety standards and our advisors can help you to get to grips with the safety essentials including assembly and setting the height of your cot.

We know that you’re also going to be looking for durability, which is why we stock the absolute highest quality products that we can find. If you’re looking for longevity, we also offer cots that can be converted into a toddler bed. We’ll explore whether this is the best option for you below.

One other factor that will almost always come into your purchasing decision is price. When shopping for new things for a baby, it can become very expensive. We stock a wide range of options at every price point so that there is something suitable for every new parent.

So, what are your options?

There are several different options to choose from. We’ll explain each of them below along with showcasing some of our favourites. Do browse the site or pop into the store to explore all of the options. We would never simply say that one item is the best, as it truly does depend on your needs as a family.

Our first option is a less traditional one but good for travelling or use around the house. The Cocoonababy is suitable from birth up to 3 – 4 months. It is designed for use on a carpet or rug, or in a cot with the cot base in the lowest position and the depth above the cot mattress superior to 50cm. The tummy band reassures and soothes baby, improving the quality and length of sleep. It helps to limit reflux problems and minimises the risk of flat head. You will still probably want to buy a cot to go with this, but it is a product that we love for its many benefits.

Cots vs. Cot-beds

A cot is usually smaller than a cot-bed, making it more suitable if you have a smaller space or will be moving house as your family grows. A cot is also a good option if you are planning to have more than one child, as you may find that you need to use the cot again before your first child is ready to move on from the cot-bed. You may also find that some children will move straight from a cot to a single bed, making the cot-bed unnecessary.

For smaller spaces, we suggest the Kidsmill Fjord Cot which is stylish, suitable from birth, has 3 height positions and offers a storage drawer. The Kidsmill Accent Cot has drawers that open with a simple push.

Adjustable height ensures that your baby is safe and that you can reach them easily. The highest position is for use until the baby is up to 3 months old. The lowest position should always be used once your baby is old enough to sit up unaided.

Many of our cots offer adjustable height, so you can choose with confidence based on your aesthetic preferences.

There are, however, lots of benefits to buying a cot-bed. They are generally slightly more expensive than a cot, but they will last longer. The removable sides and end panel convert it into a short, low bed for a toddler. This can smooth the transition to a larger bed.

The Boori Eton Expandable Cot-Bed can be converted all the way to a single bed, using an expansion kit. This is a great option for space saving whilst your child shares your bedroom, alleviating the need to buy a new bed as your child gets older. It has two base heights and is suitable from birth all the way up to around 5 years.

If you have a single bed ready, but would still like to get more use out of your cot-bed when your child grows out of it, the Boori Provence Convertible Plus Cot is suitable from birth to around 5 years when converted into a cot-bed. After this, you can use a conversion kit to turn into a sofa or a double bed.
If you are looking for something distinctive and safe, the Boori Grace Cot-Bed offers stylish, vintage details and is suitable from birth to approximately 5 years. It also has a toddler guard to keep your child safe as they sleep.

Once you’ve chosen your cot or cot-bed, do check out our guide to buying the right cot-bed mattress. This will help you to decide which type of mattress you need and give you the all-important safety information.

Toddler Beds

If you choose to use a cot, you may then need to purchase a toddler bed as your child grows. We over several options which will still look excellent in a nursery. The Kidsmill Fjord Single Bed also offers storage drawers, which are always useful for supplies.

For simplicity in a variety of colours, the Kidsmill Savona Toddler Bed is a great choice that offers excellent value.

Whilst there are lots of options available, if you consider the space that you have available, your future needs, durability and price, you should be able to find the perfect cot or cot-bed for your new arrival.
