The daily struggle. Awkwardly folding yourself into to the back seat of your car to try and lift your ever growing little one into their seat only to then have to hold the position while you continue to fiddle with the buckle for 10 minutes. Well, your back can heave a sigh of relief, as car manufacturers seem to have solved this problem, all while allowing for extended rear facing too!
A number of manufacturers have introduced a 360 degree rotation feature, which allows for extended rear facing, forward facing and (the clever bit) a stop in between, so you can face the seat towards the door, making it a whole lot easier to get your little one in and out of the car.
These innovative car seats feature mechanisms that make it simple for you to rotate to any position you choose, most of them allow you to spin with just one hand and a simple button or lever motion.
So with the two most important issues solved, safety and simplicity, how do you choose which of these seats is best for you? We've assessed the leading swivel car seats to weigh up the pros and cons, so it's easier for you to make an informed decision.
We've chosen what we think are the safest seats on the market. They're all i-Size compliant, and offer rear-facing to at least 2 years or in most cases up to 4 or 105cm. For a wider choice of swivel car seats visit our dedicated rotating car seat page.
Maxi-Cosi AxissFix Plus
Maxi-Cosi were one of the pioneers of 360 rotating seats, and the AxissFix Plus builds on their original concept with an i-Size, ISOFIX seat.
The AxissFix Plus differs slightly to the other seats in that it is installed with a top tether as opposed to a stability leg. This allows for full floor clearance, ideal for cars with under seat storage or if items need to be placed in the footwell.
The AxissFix Plus also offers a high seating position thanks to the padded seat inserts, creating a comfortable, healthy position for newborns. In terms of safety, it also boasts safety features that exceed i-Size standards, including energy absorbing materials and state of the art side-impact technology.
The AxissFix also boasts a clever A.S.B (Automatic Safety Belt) System to ensure the seat is always attached to the base, even in the event of a collision. While still extended, The AxissFix only allows for rear facing up to 87cm (approximately 2 years), although more limited, this is still above the legal regulations for forward facing travel.
Nuna are big fans of rear-facing for as long as possible due to the safety benefits that rear-facing travel provides for young children, being up to 5 times safer than forward-facing travel, which is why it's no surprise that they feature more than once in this post.
The Nuna Norr is designed for rear-facing only all the way from birth up to 4 years of age and even includes an amazing 7 recline positions during rearward travel. For extra comfort, ventilation panels and a removable mesh seat cover keep your baby cool during long journeys or hot days.
On top of this, the Norr features an adjustable headrest with an additional 7 positions, allowing the Norr to grow with your little one and ensuring comfort at every stage of their development.
The Norr's 360 degree rotation makes loading and unloading your baby easier, as the entire seat can be rotated 90 degrees toward either door, saving your back and making it easier to buckle up, while the harness holders keep the straps and buckle out of the way until you have your little one properly seated.
Installation with the ISOFIX base ensures secure fitting, with True Lock technology helping to minimise user error, and nine ISOFIX anchors that provide a truly custom fit and additional peace of mind when you're on the road. This is teamed with a super heavy duty shell, reinforced with steel that helps to absorb force away from your baby, while a crumple zone in the stability leg helps to direct force away from your baby in the event of a collision.
Above all else, the Nuna Norr has been Plus Test approved, meaning it has gone above and beyond the usual government testing and succeeded in passing the most stringent safety test in the industry, exceeding even i-Size standard testing.
New and Notable
With Britax-Romer you can be assured of attention to quality and safety in every car seat. They design, create and produce the majority of their products all under one roof to ensure every aspect of development is overseen with the utmost attention to detail and they even oversee regular in-house, state-of-the-art crash testing at their facility as well.
The Britax Romer Dualfix i-Size is the latest Extended Rear Facing favourite to receive an i-Size update, making it even safer, simpler to use and including the all-important full rotation feature.
The Dualfix i-Size car seat features a newborn inlay to keep them snug and safe from day one, the 12 recline positions mean you can keep them as comfy as possible too. The adjustable impact shield also allows you to create maximum leg room space, so you can rear face them for longer.
The Dualfix i-Size also won the 2018 Design Award and has been tested by Stiftung Warentest (06/18) with the high rating of "Good" and an overall grade of 2.1. The Dualfix i-Size can take your child from birth all the way to 4 years and offers the choice between rear-facing or forward-facing up to 105cm so you have ultimate flexibility in travel for longer.
Dualfix M i-Size
Like the Dualfix, the Britax-Romer Dualfix M is also approved to the latest R129 i-Size safety standards so with both car seats you can be assured of maximum protection for your little one with these two seats.
The Dualfix M i-Size also boasts Extended Rear Facing travel and can be rotated a full 360 degrees to make getting your little one in and out of the car simple. It also features the Britax-Romer patented Pivot Link ISOFIX system that directs the force of a collision downward and then more gently forward, with the result of greatly reducing the risk of head and neck injury to your child.
The Dualfix M i-Size features multiple recline positions meaning you can keep your little one comfortable whether they are sat up or lay flat for a nap. Alongside this, the adjustable rebound bar not only prevents the car seat from tilting in the event of impact but can also be adjusted by a full 8 degrees to match the backrest of the vehicle seat and give your child an additional 10% of leg space.
What's the difference between the Dualfix i-Size and the Dualfix M i-Size?
Predominantly, the Dualfix i-Size features the cushioned infant insert allowing you to use the Dualfix i-Size right from birth up to 4 years. The Dualfix can also be used up to 4 years but comes without the seat reducer so is only suitable for use after the infant period, usually from around 3 months old.
Dualfix 2 R
The Dualfix 2 R is designed to give you all-round flexibility for you and your child and benefits from the 360 rotation feature just like the Dualfix i-Size and the Dualfix M i-Size.
The Dualfix 2 R also offers Extended Rear Facing up to 18kg (approx. 4 years) and benefits from 8 different recline positions so you can find the perfect level of comfort for your child whether forward or rear-facing. It also features a V-shaped headrest and deep protective side wings as well as a 5-point harness to keep your little one safe and secure.
R44/04 vs. R129 Safety
The Dualfix 2 R differs in that it conforms to the R44/04 safety standard as opposed to the R129 like the Dualfix and Dualfix M. While still offering a high level of safety for your child, the Dualfix 2 R does not conform to the new i-Size safety standards and so costs a bit less than the Dualfix i-Size and Dualfix M i-Size. Because of this it can offer a more affordable solution to child safety while still benefitting from most of the same innovative features as its Dualfix siblings.

Sirona S i-Size
Cybex Sirona S i-Size is the highly anticipated Swivel Car Seat. This i-Size features Cybex's trademark safety systems such as the patented reclining headrest and LSP, all the while remaining sleek, stylish and simple to use.
Suitable from birth up to 4 years, the Sirona S can provide both rearward and forward facing travel positions, with forward facing available from 16 months (or 76 cm), Driving Directional Control prevents forward facing use before this time as a safety precaution.
If you wish, you can choose to keep your child rearward facing for the entirety of the Sirona S's use, it's entirely up to you and your personal preference, and should you choose to make the transition simply swap from rearward to forward facing in seconds thanks to the 360 rotation.
The integrated ISOFIX base comes with interactive feedback indicators that prevent you from installing your Sirona S incorrectly, making it super simple to use and ensuring you travel safe in the knowledge that your child's car seat is safe and secure.
For comfort, the headrest comes with 12 different height positions and is fitted with E.R Technology (Energy Reduction), a clever system that reduces force placed on your little one's neck during a head-on collision by progressively sliding down and limiting impact, before locking into place and providing additional support.
For those on-the-road naps, your baby has a choice of multiple recline positions during both forward and rear-facing travel, so whichever way you ride your baby's comfort is never compromised.
Cloud Z i-Size
The Cloud Z i-Size is a rear-facing infant carrier seat that's suitable from birth up to approximately 12 months, and the 180 degree rotation makes for easy access to both the seat and your baby for seamless loading and unloading.
The seat can be installed using your car's 3-point seat belt, however as with all swivel car seats, the rotation function can only be achieved when attached to an ISOFIX base, in this case the Base Z.
The Cloud Z i-Size can be reclined to a near flat position, which allows baby to remain in their seat comfortably and safely for longer, which is great if you plan on using your Cloud Z as part of a travel system. It also means your little one can sleep comfortably when on the road or out and about.
The Cybex Cloud Z comes with a Linear Side-Impact Protection system which protects your baby in the event of a side-impact collision. This Safety feature is also teamed with an energy-absorbing shell which can help reduce side-impact force by as much as 25%.
There is also a removable newborn inlay which is great for small babies, and an automatic height-adjusting headrest to keep them supported and comfortable as they grow. This adjustable headrest boasts 11 positions for customization as your child grows.
The Cloud Z also features an integrated harness guide to help achieve correction security every time as well as an XXL fold-away UPF50+ sun canopy to protect your little one from harmful UV rays on sunnier days.
Sirona Z i-Size
The Sirona Z i-Size is designed with longevity in mind, and is suitable from birth up to 4 years. The 360 rotation feature when used with the Base Z means transitioning from rear to forward-facing can happen at the click of a switch, so there's no need to re-install your car seat when the times comes. There is also a stop at the door for quick and easy loading and unloading, and magnetic harness holders to keep everything out of the way during the process.
As with the Cloud Z, the Sirona Z i-Size features the same Linear Side-Impact Protection system and an energy absorbing shell for protection in the event of a side-on collision, and because this seat can be used forward-facing, the Sirona Z also features Energy Reduction Technology. ER-Tech protects your little one's neck should you find yourself involved in a head-on collision while your little passenger is forward facing, and reduces the amount of force to their head and neck by more than 20%.
Another great safety feature is the Driving Direction Control. The Sirona Z is an extended rear-facing car seat, and is designed to be used rear-facing for as long as possible.
To prevent users from forward-facing their little ones too early, the Driving Direction Control feature makes it impossible to forward face the seat until the headrest has been adjusted to fit a child over 76 cm. There are 12 different headrest positions which allow the seat to grow comfortably with your child.
Using the Sirona Z with the Base Z allows for super quick and easy two-click installation and provides that extra peace of mind that your seat is properly secured, as well as allowing for easy rotation. For extra security the seat is fitted with a 5-point safety harness.
Please Note: both the Cloud Z and Sirona Z are now available with Cybex's new SensorSafe technology.
